Pest management and museum pets

I’m coming to the end of my second week in my new role and I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about pest management. Setting up an integrated pest management system (IPM) was certainly on my to-do list for the coming weeks, but I’ve had some surprise company which has meant I’ve sprung into action a bit sooner.

Ants… having a party on my desk! It’s not the end of the world, but I am concerned that if ants can get inside other beasties can too. As far as I know ants don’t cause any problems for museum collections but I’m going to be on guard. This got me thinking about the wonderful Behind the Scenes at the Museum documentary on BBC 4. I’ve really enjoyed the series but was surprised to see that the Freud Museum London has its own pet dog. Imagine the amount of cleaning and hoovering the staff have to do with the dog being there! At least my ants aren’t making too much mess.
